Vauxhall has begun UK customer trials of its Vivaro HYDROGEN van. Several companies, including some of the country’s largest fleets, will participate in these trials over the coming months, ahead of the UK launch of the Movano HYDROGEN, Vauxhall’s largest light commercial vehicle.
The Vivaro HYDROGEN is already available in left-hand drive (LHD) markets through Vauxhall’s sister brand, Opel, making it the first production hydrogen van available for commercial purchase.
Based on the fully electric Vivaro Electric, the Vivaro HYDROGEN is equipped with a 45kW fuel cell and a 10.5kWh lithium-ion battery, housed beneath the front seats, offering a driving range of up to 249 miles (WLTP). The 5kg hydrogen tanks, located under the floor, can be refueled in just five minutes—similar to the time it takes to fill up a conventional diesel or petrol vehicle.
The 10.5kWh battery provides additional power when needed, such as during start-up or acceleration, ensuring the fuel cell operates at optimal efficiency. It also supports regenerative braking. The van's plug-in capability allows the battery to be recharged externally if needed, offering 31 miles of pure electric range.
Thanks to smart design, the Vivaro HYDROGEN does not compromise on space compared to its combustion engine counterparts, providing up to 6.1 m³ of cargo volume and a maximum payload capacity of 1,000 kg.
The UK trial is a precursor to the launch of the Movano HYDROGEN, with orders set to open later this year and first deliveries expected in 2025. This innovative hydrogen fuel cell vehicle will offer a range of up to 311 miles (WLTP) and can be refueled in under five minutes. Its electric motor delivers 110kW (150hp) and a peak torque of 410 Nm, while the 11kWh lithium-ion battery provides extra support during acceleration and startup. The system also enables energy from braking to be recuperated and stored in the battery as electricity.
James Taylor, Managing Director of Vauxhall, said: “As the UK’s leading electric van manufacturer for the past three years, we are at the forefront of helping Britain’s businesses transition to electrification. With a 311-mile range, zero emissions in use, and fast refueling, the Movano HYDROGEN offers fleets a sustainable option alongside our complete lineup of battery electric vans. I look forward to hearing feedback from fleet operators participating in the trial as we prepare for the commercial launch of the Movano HYDROGEN later this year.”
The Movano HYDROGEN benefits from over 20 years of experience in developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at Vauxhall-Opel and Stellantis. This model will complement Vauxhall’s existing range of battery electric vans, including the Combo Electric, Vivaro Electric, and Movano Electric, with the brand having offered an electric version across its entire LCV lineup since 2021.
