Good Condition Payment (GCP)

If you return your Motability vehicle in good condition at the end of your lease, you could receive a Good Condition Payment – a financial thank-you for taking great care of your car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV.)

How much is the GCP?

  • £250 for a standard three-year lease
  • £350 for a five-year lease

This payment is built into the cost of your lease and paid back to you if you meet all the requirements when your agreement ends. These amounts do not change if you choose to extend your lease or keep your vehicle for longer.

How to qualify for the GCP

To be eligible, you’ll need to meet all five of the following conditions:

  1. Complete your full lease term
You must keep your vehicle for the full duration of the lease (usually three or five years). If the lease ends early, you won’t qualify for the payment.
  2. Return the vehicle in good condition
Your vehicle must be well looked after, regularly serviced, and free from major damage. See the breakdown below for how the condition is assessed.
  3. Have a valid MOT
Your car must have a valid MOT at the time of handback. Speak to your dealer to arrange this if needed.
  4. Return all high-value items
These must be returned with the vehicle:
    • Both sets of keys
    • The parcel shelf
    • The charging cable (if you have an electric car)
    • The service book (with up-to-date service history stamped in)
If any items are missing, replacements may be available – speak to your dealer or consider making an insurance claim (excess and claims history apply for keys).
  5. Settle any outstanding debts or charges
    This includes any unpaid:
    • Hire car fines
    • Speeding or parking tickets
    • Stopped mobility allowance payments
    • Recovery costs
If you still owe money, it may be deducted from your GCP.

What counts as ‘good condition’?

Motability understands your car will show signs of use over time. The key is to ensure that wear is reasonable and that any necessary repairs or servicing have been completed. The vehicle is assessed in five key areas:

1. Exterior panels (bonnet, roof, doors, wings, boot, sills)

  • Good: No damage
  • Fair wear and tear: Light scuffs, polishable marks, SMART-repairable dents
  • Damaged or worn: Deep scratches, rust, or unrepaired major damage

2. Bumpers (front and rear)

  • Good: No damage
  • Fair wear and tear: Light polishable marks, minor SMART-repairable dents
  • Damaged or worn: Deep scratches, paint damage, cracks

3. Wheels, trims, and tyres

  • Good: No damage
  • Fair wear and tear: Light rim scuffs, cosmetic trim marks, minor tyre cuts
  • Damaged or worn: Buckled wheels, worn or illegal tyres, deep cuts

4. Interior (passenger areas)

  • Good: Clean and damage-free
  • Fair wear and tear: Minor stains, surface scratches, wear in line with age/mileage
  • Damaged or worn: Rips, burns, heavy staining, strong odours, broken plastics

5. Load space/boot

  • Good: Clean and undamaged
  • Fair wear and tear: Light staining or scratches, reasonable damage from mobility aid use
  • Damaged or worn: Heavily soiled, missing trims (e.g., parcel shelf), broken panels
A significant number of items marked as ‘damaged or worn’ could disqualify you from receiving the GCP.

Looking after your car during the lease

To help ensure you're eligible for the GCP:

  • Follow the service schedule – all servicing is included
  • Respond to recall notices promptly
  • Regularly check:
    • Paintwork
    • Tyres (pressure and tread)
    • Engine oil and fluids
    • Lights and wipers

If you’re unsure about anything, your dealer is always happy to help.

Preparing Your Vehicle for Return

Before handing your car back at the end of your Motability lease, it's a good idea to give it a proper clean, inside and out. A clean car makes it easier to spot any issues that may affect your Good Condition Payment, such as scuffs or stains. Even minor stains on the seats or carpets can impact your eligibility, especially if they’re unlikely to be removed with professional cleaning.

At Aston Autopark, we offer a Motability Protection Pack designed to help you keep your car in great condition throughout your lease. For just £149, it includes:

- A set of 4 floor mats
- Autoglym paint protection treatment
- A paint touch-up pen

This pack offers extra peace of mind and helps maintain your vehicle's appearance, so you're in a stronger position to receive the Good Condition Payment when your lease ends.

Receiving your payment

If you qualify, your GCP will be paid automatically after your vehicle is returned.

  • Fastest: Bank transfer (within 5 working days)
  • Cheque: If bank details aren’t provided (can take up to 28 days)
