Keep Your Car Happy This Summer: Simple Tips to Stay Road-Ready

When we think of summer challenges, we picture sunburns, traffic jams and melted ice creams – not broken-down cars. But just like the cold of winter, heat and long holiday journeys can be surprisingly tough on your vehicle. The good news? A few simple checks can go a long way in keeping your car safe and stress-free during the warmer months.

1. Mind Your Battery

Summer can be the cause for either lots of short journeys or many hours spent in traffic. Both of which quietly strain your battery.

Signs to watch for:

  • Slow engine cranking
  • Dim or flickering lights
  • Dashboard warning lights not working as expected

What to do:
If your battery is over three years old, it may be worth having it tested or replaced before a big summer getaway. Try to limit short trips, and consider a battery conditioner or monitor if your car doesn’t get out much.

2. Tyres Take a Beating in the Heat

Your tyres work harder than you think – especially on long motorway journeys or when your car’s loaded up with people and luggage. Hot roads and underinflated tyres don’t mix well.

Things to check:

  • Cracks or bulges in the sidewall
  • Uneven wear
  • Tyre pressures (including your spare!)

Top tip:
Check your tyres (and your trailer or caravan’s) before you leave.

3. Got a Spare? Don’t Assume!

Not all modern cars come with a spare tyre anymore – many now have a puncture repair kit instead. These can be helpful for small issues, but won’t fix a shredded sidewall.

Before your trip:
Open the boot and check if you have a spare tyre – and if not, make sure you know how to use your repair kit. It’s also worth checking the expiry date on tyre sealant kits, as they don’t last forever.

4. Clutch Trouble

Summer road trips often mean unfamiliar roads, steep hills, and heavy loads – a tough mix if your clutch is already feeling worn.

Warning signs:

  • The clutch pedal feels heavy or sticks
  • Car revs climb, but speed doesn’t match
  • A high biting point

Stay prepared:
Plan your routes, especially if towing a caravan, and double-check that your car is up to the task. If your clutch is already showing signs of wear, a pre-holiday repair can save you from a roadside headache.

5. Give the Alternator a Break

Your alternator powers everything from your headlights to your USB ports – and it works harder when there’s more tech plugged in. Add hot weather into the mix and any weaknesses quickly become a problem.

Red flag:
A red battery light on your dashboard. Don’t ignore it – pull over safely and get help.

Best defence:
Limit how many devices you’re charging at once and look out for any signs of electrical strain in the weeks before you travel.

Summer is the perfect time to explore, but a little preparation goes a long way. A quick health check now could save you hours of waiting on the hard shoulder later.
