New Astra Sports Tourer!
- Brit-built Astra Sports Tourer set to hit UK showrooms by the end of 2010
- Versatile and capacious cargo area combines with sleek design, inside and out
- Extended powertrain line-up enhanced by Start/Stop technology
- Major contribution by Vauxhall Engineering Centre to development

These are the first official pictures of the new Astra Sports Tourer, which will receive its debut at this years Paris Motor Show in September and hit UK showrooms by the end of the year.
The Sports Tourer will be the second model to join the new Astra range, which has now sold over 28,000 units in the UK (to end of May) since it's launch last December, and has helped the Astra become Britain's best-selling retail range in the first five months of this year.
Combining high levels of practicality, clothed in a typically sleek and rakish body from Brit, Mark Adams' design team, the Sports Tourer will be available to order from the start of October.
Crucially, the Astra Sports Tourer and its hatch sibling will also be coming the first Vauxhall models to adopt Start/Stop technology, reducing emissions and fuel consumptions.
Illustrating the depth of Vauxhall's engineering and manufacturing excellence in the UK, the Sports Tourer will be assembled solely at Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire, while its new upper-body structure has been 100 per cent engineered at Vauxhall Engineering Centre in Bedfordshire. And like the recently launched Astra hatch, the Sport Tourer will feature key dynamic elements tuned for UK roads.
Practicality and Equipment
Packed with clever features, the Astra Sports Tourer maintains the hatch's wheelbase 92685mm), yet its superior packing has allowed the maximum load length to be increased by 28mm to 1835mm, and its load volume by 309 litres to 500 litres with the rear seats up.
As well as boasting a cargo area with flat wall linings to fully optimise available space, a new FlexFold featuyre (standard or optional depending on trim level) allows each section of the 60:40 split-fold rear seatbacks to be lowered at the press of a button housed in the walls of the cargo compartment. In addition , with the rear seat cushions folded up against the front seat-backs, the Sports Tourer has a completely flat floor and a maximum load capacity of up to 1550 litres.
But improved interior practicality doesn't stop there. Compared with the current Astra estate, the Sports Tourer has an additional 25 litres of storage space in the cabin, 50 per cent more than before. And like its hatch sibling, the Sports Tourer also benefits from the option of Vauxhall's award winning Ergonomic Sports Seats, providing front occupants with best-in-class comfort.
In keeping with Vauxhall's commitment to bringing premium features to the compact segment, the Astra Sports Tourer will also adopt the option of Intelligent Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL), which has eight different bi-xenon settings and automatically adapts the headlights according to weather and road conditions.
Design
The Astra Sports Tourer's exterior design aims to raise the bar in the compact-estate market, bringing a touch of class and dynamism, without compromising the car's high levels of practicality. The tapered profile, falling roofline and prominent 'blades' set into the sides of the car are complimented by a muscular shoulder line, which leads gracefully into eye-catching sculpted rear light units.
Inside, occupants will benefit from same embracing, premium cabin as in the new Astra hatch, with features like wraparound wing front facia and unique ambient lighting.
Powertrains
From launch, Astra Sports Tourer buyers will have a choice of six frugal, yet lively engines, with an ultra-low emissions, Start/Stop-quipped ecoFLEX model available soon afterwards.
The petrol line-up starts with the 100PS 1.4i ECOTEC-4 with variable valve timing and sequential fuel injection, while a 1.6i ECOTEC-4 with 115PS is also available. The Sports Tourer's most powerful petrol engine will be the smooth and punchy 1.4i Turbo which produces 140PS, yet achieves a combined fuel consumption of 45.6 MPG and CO2 emissions of 145g/km.
A new ecoFLEX model will be available soon after launch and will be one of the first Vauxhall models to get Start/Stop technology. Based on the 1.3 CDTi 95PS engine, the ecoFLEX features a Diesel Particulate Fil;ter (DPF) and a variable geometry turbocharger.
Two 1.7 CDTi engines, with either 110PS or 125PS, and a 160PS 2.0 CDTi, which combines high performance with 55.4 MPG combined economy and emissions of just 134g/km, complete the Sports Tourer's diesel engine range.
Chassis
From the start of the Astra Sports Tourer's development, Vauxhall's target was to maintain current levels of ride and handling enjoyed by the five-door hatch. As a a consequence, its wheelbase remains the same at 2685mm, as do its front and rear tracks (1544mm and 1588mm respectively).
Also carried over is the hatch's innovative compound crank/Watt's link rear suspension, which combines exceptional body control and ride characteristics and is unique to Vauxhall/Opel. For the Sports Tourer, the compound crank's settings have been revised, as have damper calibrations, to cater for the model's higher load capabilities without compromising the hatch's dynamics.
Vauxhall has also carried over the steering settings from the hatch, which are bespoke to all new UK Astras. This programme offers drivers more natural feel, thanks to careful tuning of the car's electronic power steering system.
FlexRide, Vauxhall's adaptive suspension system, is also available as an option on the Sports Tourer. The system continuously adapts to changes in driving style and cornering speed. In standard mode, FlexRide offers the whole bandwidth of settings available and adjusts to suit the driver's behaviour. In Tour mode, damper settings are relaxed to optimise ride quality, while in Sport mode, throttle and steering responses are sharpened, in addition to the adoption of stiffer damper settings.
For customers who tow, the Sports Tourer will be available with Vauxhall's electronic Trailer Stability Assist system, which subtly brakes individual wheels to maintain control of the trailer/caravan in emergency situations.

The all new Astra is an outstanding, bold and dynamic compact car, designed to drive as dynamically as it looks and offering features rarely found the in Compact Car Segment.
The price of the all new Astra reflects the aggressive market the car enters into and delivers a high level of specification and quality.
For example, the entry level Exclusiv model starts at £15,657, which is only £270 more expensive that the current entry level Astra model and offers much more, such as standard air conditioning, electronic stability control, 16” wheels and a CD player with MP3 format and Aux in.
The same model is priced £690 below the more comparable Active 1.4 (90PS) model and even the new 1.4 (100PS) Exclusiv is priced £355 below this outgoing Active model.

Next generation Astra: The inside story

More pictures at the tail of this article
Clever packing means more occupant comfort and space.
Distinctive exterior design cues echoed in cabin.
Quality feel throughout cabin enhanced by extensive use of premium materials.
These are the first interior pictures of the Vauxhall Astra, which will debut at this September's Frankfurt Motor Show and will reach UK dealers by late this year.
Echoing the flowing forms of its bodywork, the new Astra's interior marks a major shift towards premium design and quality in the UK's compact sector, and continues Vauxhall's design evolution which started five years ago with the current Astra, followed by a further step-change last year with the launch of the Insignia.
The Astra's interior employs the recurring wing and blade motifs that were first introduced in the Insignia and are now used in a fresh and innovative way. The blade theme is expressed in details like the gooseneck shape of the door grab handles and the trim for the gearshift moulding and steering wheel.
As you look at the Astra's wraparound instrument panel, which embraces both front seat occupants, the wing design is immediately visible as it arcs across the cabin into the door-top mouldings. The dashboard has a black, grained finish with a subtly different texture to other mouldings in the cabin.
Ambient lighting enhances the quality feel of the cabin, with lighting points framing the gearbox surround, and providing illumination from above the centre console and within the doorhandle recesses, depending on trim level.
The feeling of cabin space and depth is augmented by a centre panel mounted at a shallow 30-degee angle, which sweeps down from the top of the instrument panel to the centre console, creating a flowing surface that incorporates the gearshift. Like the Insignia, the Astra's main clocks and gauges are ringed with chrome, with the speedometer and tachometer pods angled inwards towards the driver.
Special emphasis has gone into the design and engineering of the Astra's seats, which now had industry-leading levels of adjustment. Their height can be raised by up to 65mm, while their fore and aft range extendes to 280mm, allowing all drivers and passengers to find their ideal seating position. In addition, the Ergonomic Sports Seats (standard in all Elite models) have improved tilt adjustment, four-way power lumbar support, superior side support and supporting foam pads.
- Storage and packing
"So do people actually put gloves in their gloveboxes?"
This was one of the many questions put to potential customers by Vauxhall's designers as they researched what people stored in their cars, and where they put various items in their cabins. As a result, the new generation Astra has a raft of clever storage solutions unparalleled in the compact sector, some of which have even been patented.
Using feedback from the survey, the interior team first compiled a list of the 20 most common items customers stored in the cars; pens, coins, a flashlight, a road atlas, a parking disc, sunglasses, a wallet, paper tissues, a mobile phone, CD's, MP3 players, cups, magazines, newspapers, fruit, a first aid kit, a jacket, a 1.5/1.0.05-litre drinks bottle. And, of course, gloves.
Next, they noted where owners wanted to keep the items and looked for practical solutions. They found that car companies tented to focus on storage size alone, and that lead to irritating problems, such as CD's being stored in the centre console, preventing the arm rest from being fully dropped down.
Max Kuncl, the team's Performance Integration Manager likened the challenge to a puzzle: "It was important for the team not only to find places for the items to fit, but for the new Astra's interior to still look great, and maintain high quality standards throughout the cabin.
The painstaking attention to detail has resulted in a variety of simple, but effective storage solution. A hard-shelled sunglass case has been inserted above the door opening on the driver's side; coin slots and pen holders and moulded into the inside edge of the glovebox lid; and the glove box itself has two removable compartments, while a second mini-glovebox has been added just below the light switch.
Further storage innovation is illustrated by the centre console, which can accommodate nine CD cases, as well as having a small storage area and an insert for two cup holders. There's also the option of an under-seat drawer beneath the passenger seat which is big enough to hold a pair of shoes. Rear passengers also benefit, with a 12-volt connection available for mp3 players, in addition to space for drinks bottles.
The new Astra's boot also came under close scrutiny. A recess was created in the side of the boot to accept either a first aid kit or warning triangle, while a patented Flex-Floor was devised to offer further under-floor storage, while the floor itself can fixed at different heights.
And those gloves? According to the survey, most owners don't keep them in the glovebox at all. They usually get thrown in the door's side pocket, next to the ice scraper.
- Materials and Quality
"Our goal was to make the perceptual quality of the interior of the next generation Astra as great as that of the Vauxhall Insignia" says Peter Hasselbach, in charge of Design Appearance Quality. "This is in line with Vauxhall's mission to bring innovations and quality to the compact class. "
The quality of the materials used in the Astra can be seen in areas like the grained surfaces, the textured panels, the chrome trim elements and the feel and operation of the buttons and switches. In addition, all the Astra's main surfaces are textured with upclass materials and top grains to give a strong, premium feel.

Vauxhall’s new Astra breaks cover in first official pictures

More pictures at the tail of the article
The all new Vauxhall Astra is set to;
- Set to replicate current Astra’s success as best-selling British-built carBold, distinctive exterior design matched with spacious, premium-feel cabin
- All new chassis with adaptive damping will raise the bar in class for comfort and handling
These are the first official images of the all new, British-built Vauxhall Astra, which will debut as a five-door hatchback at this September’s Frankfurt Show and will appear in UK showroom s at the end of the year.
Making the sixth generation of Astra in 30 years, the new car’s design team was led by Mark Adams, the British designer responsible for the 2009 European Car of the Year-winning Vauxhall Insignia. With it’s strong, cab-forward silhouette, steeply-raked windscreen and sloping rear roof line, the new Astra makes ingenious use of many of the design features found in the Insignia, but in a fresh and innovative way. Also like the Insignia, it has spent over 600 hours in the wind tunnel, benefiting performance, economy and overall refinement. “We’re continuing with the same premium design cues as the Insignia, inside and outside of the car” says Adams, Vice President of GM Europe Design. “However, the main design themes, like the wing-shaped light signatures and the blade, needed and individual execution to avoid ‘cloning’ the model ranges. This is why, for instance, you see the twin wings in the rear lights and a reversed blade on its flanks.” Underpinning the Astra’s rakish, 4.4 metre-length body, is an all-new chassis with a 71 millimetre-linger wheelbase, benefiting both passenger comfort and packing. Wider tracks front and rear feture, as does a new rear axle design, which not only improves stability and agility, but takes the Astra’s ride comfort into a different league.
Enhancing the Astra’s dynamic performance still further is the option of Vauxhall’s clever FlexRide system, a rarity in this section which offers drivers three unique damper settings – standard, sport and tour – while being fully adaptive to changes in driving style and cornering speed.
Pictures of the new Astra’s interior will be released soon, but in the meantime expect similar strides in quality to those found in the Insignia, combined with big improvements in packaging, seat design and in-cabin storage. Mark Adam’s unique wrap-around dash treatment will also appear in the Astra, but with a different take on that found in the Insignia.
Unique in this sector will be the Astra’s optional, latest generation AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting), which features bi-xenon lighting changes its intensity and reach to suit prevailing road conditions. A similar system was introduced on the Insignia, and is now recognised as one of the most advanced system available.
The highlight of the new Astra’s powertrain line-up is the introduction of an all-new, 140PS turbocharged 1.4 litre petrol unit, which builds on Vauxhall’s commitment to engine downsizing and reduced emissions/fuel consumption, while retaining the performance of a larger capacity vehicle. The 1.4T joins three further petrol engines, which range from 100PS to 180PS, and four diesel engines ranging from 95PS to 160PS. All engines are Euro 5 compliant.
“The only part of the Astra which isn’t new is the name,” said Andy Gilson, Vauxhall’s Marketing Director. “And that name currently accounts for around 30 percent of Vauxhall’s car sales, with the five-door hatch taking 60 percent of those sales alone – so it’s important to lead with this body style. Not only is the Astra a crucial new model for Vauxhall, but we’re confident that its blend of dynamic design, new-to-class technology and immense driver appeal will attract an even broader spectrum of buyers in this sector.”
